From Pilot to Global Success: Howmet Aerospace Scales Efficiency with Ellison Technologies
In aerospace manufacturing, precision and uptime aren’t just goals—they’re non-negotiable. At Howmet Aerospace’s Barberton, Ohio shop, performance is the benchmark for global operations. To meet rising demands and lead by example, Howmet partnered with Ellison Technologies to build a model of repeatable, scalable efficiency.
“When you run machines nonstop—lights-out for days at a time—you’re not just buying a machine,” says Jeff Shaffer, Process Engineering Manager. “You’re buying support. Ellison Technologies is willing to provide that support.”
Building the Model Shop
As the launch point for process innovation, Howmet’s Barberton location sets the standard for facilities worldwide. That means every new machine must deliver speed, reliability, and flexibility under real-world, high-volume conditions.
After evaluating multiple solutions, Howmet standardized on DN Solutions machines—with Ellison Technologies providing the service and engineering support behind them.
“We’ve worked closely with the Ellison team to develop custom processes no one else was willing to commit to,” Jeff said. “They’ve helped us push the boundaries of what is possible.”

The shop floor now includes multiple numbers of each of the following DN models:
PUMA V8300R and V8300L: A heavy-duty vertical turning center that delivers the rigidity and power needed for Howmet’s large part production—without compromising precision.
PUMA V400R and V400L: Ideal for mid-size parts, this model balances high-speed performance with tight tolerances—perfect for improving surface finishes, enabling more complex components to be machined efficiently.
VAW800: A specialized vertical turning center that boosts throughput for high-volume production, with built-in automation compatibility for lights-out operation.
Each machine plays a specific role in Howmet’s process development, helping reduce labor costs per part, increase uptime, and improve finish quality across the board.
Results Worth Replicating
With Ellison Technologies, the Barberton shop has:
- Reduced cycle times
- Improved uptime and delivery performance (“DN machines always arrive on time—or early”)
- Achieved finer surface finishes and reduced tolerances
- Lowered labor requirements through process automation
The success of this collaboration has made Barberton the benchmark location for Howmet, with the machine and process strategy now being rolled out to facilities across the globe.

Looking Ahead

As Howmet develops new manufacturing processes, they already know who they’ll turn to for the next step forward. With DN Solutions equipment and Ellison Technologies' commitment behind them, Howmet is positioned to keep scaling innovation worldwide.
“This isn’t just about the machine tools,” Jeff said. “It is a partnership with an innovative world-class distributor, building solutions that are repeatable, reliable, and ready for the future.”
